Mature Product Marketing Requires a New Marketing Methodology

Manufacturers and dealers are facing the challenge of selling mature physical security products. Door access control is a good example of a product that has entered the mature stage of their market lifecycle. The fundamental technology is well established, dealers understand the basic product, and customers know why they need it. In a mature market, differentiation becomes more difficult, competition increasingly focuses on price, and margins come under pressure.
This article discusses how Educational Content Marketing can provide new opportunities in a mature market.

New access control technology has provided new growth opportunities. It has evolved to provide new benefits.
Mobile credentials, biometric identification, cloud-based management, and integration with video surveillance and other security systems have significantly expanded the capabilities and the value proposition of access control.
It is possible for dealers and manufacturers to take advantage of the new technology, but it requires focused marketing to enable these benefits. You can’t use the old techniques to market the new access control market. Instead, marketing must focus on educating the market, much like how we educated people when a new product was introduced. Education will create new growth opportunities within a mature market.
The challenge is ensure that dealers and their customers better understand what has changed and, more importantly, why these changes matter to them.

Mobile credentials don’t fundamentally change what access control does; they change how identity is established and managed. Instead of issuing and replacing plastic cards, credentials can be provisioned or revoked digitally, and users can carry them on devices they already have. HID’s 2026 research says mobile credentials have reached “critical mass,” while ASSA ABLOY’s 2025 research found fully mobile environments had more than tripled from 2023 to 17% of respondents.
Biometrics push the market further from “What card do you have?” toward “Who are you?” HID’s 2026 survey found 45% regarded biometrics as strategic, although privacy and ethical concerns are significant.

Cloud access control changes more than the credential. It changes the management and economic model.
A traditional pitch might be:
“We can control who gets through your doors.”
The cloud/mobile pitch becomes:
“You can manage people, credentials, doors and multiple facilities from anywhere, issue or revoke credentials remotely, integrate access with other business systems, and reduce administrative effort.”
Cloud-supported platforms enable remote management, centralized administration and easier integration, while mobile credentials allow permissions to be issued and changed without physically producing cards.
That shifts the competitive discussion from hardware specifications and price per door toward operational efficiency, identity management, scalability, user experience and recurring services.

A dealer may know that mobile credentials are available, but can they explain why a customer should migrate from cards to smartphones? A customer may have heard about cloud access control, but do they understand the operational and financial advantages of managing multiple locations remotely? And when should biometrics be considered instead of—or in addition to—traditional credentials?
This Is Where Educational Content Marketing Becomes Valuable
New technology doesn’t create demand simply because it exists. Customers have to understand the benefits before they have a reason to buy.
Educational Content Marketing provides a way to explain these new capabilities in terms of the problems they solve and the business benefits they provide.
Instead of marketing access control by saying:
“Buy our new access control system.”
We change the conversation to:
“Access control has changed. Let us help you understand what the new technology can do for your organization.”
That opens the door to educational articles, videos, newsletters, and dealer communications addressing the questions customers are actually asking:
Should I replace cards with mobile credentials? When should I use biometrics? What are the advantages of cloud-based access control? Can I upgrade my existing system rather than replace it? How can access control integrate with my video surveillance system?
Each question becomes an opportunity to educate the customer – and each answer can become a reason to upgrade or purchase.
Access control is an example of technology that has reached the mature cycle. The challenge is to let the market know that it has undergone a technological transformation. Mobile credentials, biometrics, cloud management, and system integration have created new benefits and new opportunities for growth – but only when dealers and customers understand them.
It is critical to make everyone know that Access Control has renewed a mature market faster than many customers’ understanding of it. That knowledge gap is precisely where educational marketing has value.
That is the opportunity for manufacturers and dealers.
