Get Out of the Box to Enhance Your Marketing

Enhancing Your Marketing to Become More Successful

Get Out of the Box

I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to turn on a light, and nothing happened. So what did I do? I flipped the switch again. And again. Or I’m sitting in the car, pressing the start button, and nothing happens. Naturally, I press it again, as though the car might reconsider.

There are many things in life like that. We repeat an action that isn’t working because it worked before. Instead of changing what we’re doing, we just keep pushing the same button. We are stuck in a box.

Marketing Can Fall into the Same Trap.

The Marketing Trap
The Marketing Trap

When business slows and sales decline, companies often continue using the same marketing methods they have used for years. Change is difficult. If something worked in the past, our natural reaction is to keep doing it, even when the results tell us otherwise.

How Do We Know When Marketing Isn’t Working?

Marketing is not an exact science. We use metrics to measure email opens, website visits, clicks, leads, impressions, engagement, and conversions. These measurements are helpful, but ultimately the most important question is much simpler: Is marketing helping us increase sales?

If the answer is no, perhaps it is time to reconsider what we are doing.

Maybe we conducted a direct-mail campaign and discovered that very few people opened the envelope. Maybe we invested heavily in Google search only to find that AI-generated answers and changing search behavior reduced visits to our website.

Maybe we attended trade shows, purchased larger booths, and spent more on travel and displays, but the leads we generated didn’t justify the investment.

There are many reasons marketing programs fail. We can blame poor targeting, a weak message, lack of follow-up, bad timing, or using the wrong activity for the objective.

Sometimes those explanations are correct. But sometimes we simply need to stop pushing the same button.

Email campaigns can fail because people are overwhelmed by promotional messages and never open them. Webinars can fail because prospects recognize them as sales presentations and don’t attend. Cold calling has become increasingly difficult because people screen calls, block unfamiliar numbers, and often consider unsolicited calls an annoyance rather than an opportunity.

So what can we do differently?

Think Outside of the Box

One approach is Educational Content Marketing (ECM).

Instead of beginning with:

“Here’s what we sell.”

Educational Content Marketing begins with:

“Here’s something useful that can help you make a better decision.”

There may not be a single statistic proving that educational marketing always performs better than every traditional marketing method. However, there is substantial evidence that useful educational and thought-leadership content can build trust, encourage buyers to investigate products, and make decision-makers more receptive to subsequent sales outreach.

For example, 2024 Edelman–LinkedIn B2B research found that 73% of decision-makers said an organization’s thought-leadership content was a more trustworthy basis for assessing its capabilities than conventional marketing materials and product sheets.

Even more significant for sales and marketing, 9 out of 10 decision-makers and C-suite executives said they were more likely to be receptive to outreach from a company that consistently produces high-quality thought leadership.

The same research found that 75% of decision-makers and C-suite executives said a particular piece of thought leadership had prompted them to research a product or service they had not previously considered.

Content Marketing Institute’s 2025 B2B research provides additional evidence. Marketers reported that content marketing helped them:

  • 87% create brand awareness
  • 74% generate demand and leads
  • 62% nurture subscribers, audiences, and leads
  • 52% increase loyalty among existing customers
  • 49% generate sales and revenue

Educational content gives prospects a reason to pay attention before we ask them to buy.

Thinking outside the box doesn’t necessarily mean throwing away your existing marketing program.

It may mean giving your existing marketing something better to say.

Keep your email system but change what you email. Instead of another product promotion, send an article or video that answers a question your customers are asking.

Keep social media but give people something useful enough to click.

Keep advertising, but direct prospects to educational resources that help them solve a problem rather than immediately asking them to buy something.

Perhaps reduce some of your tradeshow spending and use those resources to educate and nurture prospects before and after the show.

Keep your dealer network but give dealers educational content that helps them start meaningful conversations with customers.

Keep your intent data but connect the detected interest with educational content that addresses the subject the prospect is researching.

The marketing process changes from:

Promote → Generate Leads → Sell

To:

Educate → Build Trust → Generate Interest → Identify Intent → Sell

Summary

Educational Content Marketing adds an important step: helping prospects understand their problem, evaluate alternatives, and make better decisions before the sales conversation begins.

Stop clicking the light switch and change the light bulb. Get out of your box. Recognize the futility of using programs that don’t work. If your current marketing isn’t generating enough sales, don’t necessarily do more marketing. Give your existing marketing something more valuable to say.
